Hello, my name is Laura Marie Burschberg. I am currently undergoing training with Bartels-Langness to become a Merchant in the wholesale and foreign trade (Kauffrau im Groß- und Außenhandel), combined with studying towards a Bachelor of Arts. The chance to carry out closely interlinked studies and training within three years is a great opportunity, which I noticed while choosing a career.
The training begins with an initial two-day seminar, during which all new apprentices get to know the company and their co-trainees better. On the first day we learnt a lot about the company and its history, as well as about rights, obligations and conduct during the apprenticeship. We spent almost all of the second day in Bartels-Langness' central warehouse in Neumünster. Here we became acquainted with those who soon would be training us (generally the management of the departments), as the first year of study is spent as an apprentice in Neumünster. The reason for this is so that we apprentices are kept close to the products, so that we can get to know the heart of the company: wholesale trade. The departments based in Neumünster are: Sales, Fruit and Vegetables, Warehouse/Complaints, Incoming Goods and the Meat Centre. Trainees are placed in every department. You pass through two departments during the first year of training, following which you switch to the Head Office in Kiel. I have been working in the Sales department for the range of dry food products since the beginning of my training. They were so very friendly in accepting me there and I have a great deal of varying things to do. Trust me, it’s really fun! Tasks are given to me, which I then tackle on my own, giving me the feeling that I’m truly contributing something. Yet all of my colleagues are always on hand to help me if I have questions, and can tell how they also enjoy spreading their knowledge. Although I have only as of yet been part of this department, I have the feeling that I've already learnt an incredible amount. I look forward to more!
The blocks of theory, i.e. my course of studies, take place at the Wirtschaftsakademie (WAK) in Kiel. As of yet I have unfortunately only been able to attend the so-called “first semester meeting”, because my first block of lessons begins in January. The blocks always last 10 weeks, with the final week consisting exclusively of the written exams. There are transfer projects which need to be completed during the practical phases within the company, which are then submitted at the start of the following semester at the WAK. I am currently working on this project. Every student writes the first paper about the company they are training with. I know a lot already, but by no means everything… But one thing is for sure:
Bartels-Langness is a great company with character, and I hope that you too will soon be filling out this report, in order to inform your successors about how satisfied you are with your apprenticeship at Bartels-Langness!
